At the start of today we thought there was little chance that any racing would take place at all. The skies had well and truly opened up and the track and surrounding areas were under water for much of the morning. The boys had plenty of time to fiddle with gearing and work out different combinations for extremely low light. Our Year 8 team took the time to complete their second car in the hope that they would be even faster than yesterday.
The clouds eventually cleared around midday and racing got underway. The first round is all about sorting out the mid range cars with the fastest cars given byes into Round 2. From there the better mid range cars move back into racing the faster cars in a series of knockout races. The top eight cars go through to the finals.
Our Year 7 car was narrowly beaten in the first round but proved they were worthy of a place amongst the better cars progressing to Round 2 only to be beaten narrowly. Our Year 8 team had quite a struggle with their electronics after performing quite well on Day 1. They had a bye in Round 1 based on their Day 1 performance but found the going tough in Round 2 being eliminated in two races.
Our defending champions from 2013 cruised through the early rounds. They were slightly off the pace on Day 1 with both cars from South Strathfield HS performing very strongly. We easily made it through to the final after both Strathfield cars were drawn against each other in the semi finals.
The final was always going to be very close. Unfortunately the weather closed in and once again conditions became unpredictable. Both teams made last minute alterations to gearing and electronics to get the most out of their cars in very gloomy and wet conditions. It was a tribute to both teams that they could get their cars around the track in such poor light. Unfortunately we were unable to match the Strathfield car and they won the reduced final races 2-0.
Congratulations to all three teams on a wonderful campaign. From start to finish they have been wonderful ambassadors for the College and we are very proud of their achievements.
Here is the second place 2014 UNSW Sunsprint team. Well done boys!
